Anna Maria's path to art – from doctor to magical painter

Anna Maria hasn't always been an artist. She was once a general practitioner in Odense. But one day her body and soul said stop. She collapsed with stress and had to let go of the clinic – and the identity she had built up.

Her path back was through nature and horses. She used equine-assisted therapy to heal and through it found a new way to help others. For several years, Anna Maria worked as a therapist for people with anxiety, stress and grief – and wrote two books about how animals and nature can calm the nervous system and transform darkness and pain into strength and magic.

It was only when she was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (Asperger's) in connection with her burnout that she truly saw herself clearly. She discovered that her greatest strength was not in fitting into systems – but in her creativity and intuitiveness. She could no longer ignore herself in order to help others. She had to find a home within herself.

And she found that home in art.

As a child, Anna Maria drew all the time. Today, she paints – especially horses – to soothe, uplift and bring people home to themselves. When you look at one of Anna Maria's works, she wants it to feel like therapy in your own living room. She is not present as a therapist – but her art is.

The artist's background

Anna Maria Olsen was born in Copenhagen and studied medicine in Odense, where she worked as a doctor and equine-assisted therapist.

Her parents came to Denmark from Poland and Russia a few years before she was born, and Anna Maria grew up with a quiet awareness of belonging to two worlds at once.

In her paintings, she often senses a longing, an inner force, and a touch of something mysterious and ancient. It is not something she has consciously chosen – it’s simply there.

Perhaps it is her Slavic heritage speaking. Perhaps it’s just her way of seeing the world.

At the age of 47, she was diagnosed with Asperger’s. Following this discovery, she left her work as a practicing physician and equine-assisted therapist to focus fully on her art.

This transition marked a rediscovery of her creative voice and a new path where painting became a way to communicate and connect on a deep, therapeutic level.

Anna Maria's art speaks to the wordless within you

Nature and horses are Anna Maria's deepest inspiration. She is fascinated by nonverbal communication – the silent signals that dissolve stress and anxiety and create connection. That is also what her art does: it speaks in symbols and emotions. It calms the nervous system, awakens memories and transforms darkness into hope.

Her style is fantasy realism in oil paint, built up in layers of acrylic, ink and spray – and finally oil that brings the colors to life. Each work is a journey – into the inner, into the adventure, into the transformation.

For those of you who live with art

Anna Maria's paintings are created with the intention of bringing light and magic into people's lives. They hang in homes, where they create peace, strength, transformation – and become small, too, where one can breathe deeply and feel oneself.

A collector once told Anna Maria how one of her paintings made her cry – it brought back warm memories of someone who had recently passed away, and in the midst of grief it brought relief.

This is what Anna Maria wants, her art does:
That you see your own magic. That you feel your emotions. That you find home.

The secret behind the depth of the paintings

“I don't just paint horses. I paint homecomings.”

Nature calms

When Anna Maria is not painting, she can often be found in nature with her horses.

Due to her autism, Anna Maria needs the support and reassurance she finds in nature and in being with animals in order to function as a full-time professional artist.

Now and in the future

Today, Anna Maria works in her studio in her home with a view of nature and horses. Here she lives in rural surroundings with her husband, with room for all the animals.

In 2024, she studied at the Milan Art Institute, where she refined her artistic style and process.

Her artistic style is colorful fantasy realism with various horses, typically in motion.

Art gives her an opportunity to share the special inner worlds that autism opens up, and she brings this unique experience to her audience.

With her own journey from grief to new life spark in her baggage, she looks forward to exhibiting her works around the country and bringing the healing power of art to more people.

Planned exhibitions in 2025
